In for the Long Haul

Dear Fellow White Folks,

Have you spoken up about racism in the last week? I hope so, but it’s important that you not stop there. Acute, horrific situations demand immediate action, but long-term change requires that we commit to this work for the long haul. Here are a few thoughts on making that happen:

#1: Expand. Get out of your bubble. Follow people who don’t look like you. This can and should include racial justice advocates, but can also include people who like the same things you do.

#2: Listen. Without commenting. Just listen.

#3: Learn. Don’t pepper people on your social media feeds with questions about race and racism. They don’t exist to educate you. Do your own homework.

#4: Act. Act in big ways. Act in small ways. Act in ways that you can sustain over the long term.

P.S. As you think about your next steps, be thoughtful. Make sure that the actions you take aren’t about making you look and feel good. Learn about the term “white savior.” Avoid it.
